An African-American from a family of modest means, St. John became an amputee at age five. Against tremendous odds, she used imagination and determination to push past the limitations of her disability and become a silver-medal winner in downhill skiing in the 1984 Paralympics in Innsbruck, Austria.
A Rhodes Scholar and Harvard graduate, St. John has a rich background that spans the gamut from sales at IBM to Wall Street and from the White House National Economic Council to success as owner of her own motivational speaking, coaching and writing business. She is part of the 2012 effort working to bring the Olympics to New York City and recently rang the NYSE opening bell to promote the NYC2012 bid. St. John has been named "One of the five most inspiring women in America," by NBC Nightly News.
On November 13th, St. John will share anecdotes from her own family rituals and traditions about what inspired her to move past her limitations; insights from her years of executive coaching and how this research and experience applies to making parenting easier; and stories about how prayer strengthens families based on interviews with Maya Angelou, Barbara Bush, Amy Grant, Sopranos star Edie Falco, and other heroic women from St. John’s new book How Strong Women Pray.
How Strong Women Pray is an intimate spiritual journey undertaken by the author to learn about prayer from strong women who are mothers, politicians, entertainers, athletes, business women, wives, and more. The stories are told in first person narrative by each notable woman and intertwined with vignettes from St. John’s life. Chapters are linked by common themes such as dealing with death; being a good mother; healing from abuse, alcoholism, divorce; etc.
Tune in to NBC on November 2nd when St. John will appear on The Today Show. She has also been featured on Good Morning America, CNN, The Montel Williams Show, NBC Nightly News and The Discovery Health Channel and in some of the nation's leading publications, such as The New York Times, Christian Science Monitor, the L.A. Times and People Magazine.
How Strong Women Pray will be available for purchase and signing at a cost of $16.99 at Chesapeake College on November 13th. Cash, checks, and credit cards will be accepted. As part of their community service, 8th graders from The Country School will be on hand to assist with book sales. A portion of the proceeds from book sales will be donated to The Country School 8th graders to be used for their work with the YMCA Special Olympics.
